I have written the following pages for my students who might be curious about why we are doing some of the unusual things we do in lessons. I also wrote it for any who are just curious. It is my attempt to translate an often confusing subject into plain English.

The exercises we do are not random, but based on an understanding of the voice that has given good results, helping singers to trust their voices and enjoy singing more than they ever thought possible. I find myself talking a lot about the “why” of what we’re doing in lessons, when perhaps the time would be better spent just exercising and experiencing your voice. By getting this down in writing, perhaps I can avoid some of this talking and simply let you explore if you are curious.

Of course, a singer doesn’t really need to know all this to be a good singer. Please take from this as much or as little as you find interesting and helpful.
